{"id":1331,"date":"2015-09-14T13:13:21","date_gmt":"2015-09-14T11:13:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trikustik.at\/?page_id=1331&#038;lang=en"},"modified":"2015-12-03T17:38:55","modified_gmt":"2015-12-03T16:38:55","slug":"architectural-acoustics-and-room-acoustics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/trikustik.at\/en\/knowledge\/architectural-acoustics-and-room-acoustics\/","title":{"rendered":"Architectural acoustics and room acoustics"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Architectural acoustics and room acoustics<a href=\"https:\/\/trikustik.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bauakustik_Raumakustik_550x250-en.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"550\" height=\"250\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2126\" src=\"https:\/\/trikustik.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bauakustik_Raumakustik_550x250-en.jpg\" alt=\"Bauakustik_Raumakustik_550x250-en\" \/><\/a><\/h1>\n<p>Architectural acoustics and room acoustics are frequently confused, yet the two are very different things.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Room acoustics<\/strong> deals with the acoustical properties of an enclosed space when the sound source comes from within this enclosed space.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Architectural acoustics <\/strong>deals with the transmission of sound between two rooms, or from the inside to the outside of a room (and vice-versa).<\/p>\n<h1>From a more technical perspective<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/trikustik.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/Raumakustik_Bauakustik_Veres-en.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"360\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2128 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/trikustik.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/Raumakustik_Bauakustik_Veres-en.jpg\" alt=\"Raumakustik_Bauakustik_Veres-en\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When sound hits a surface such as a wall (labelled W<sub>1<\/sub> in this diagram, standing for sound power), a portion is reflected (W<sub>refl<\/sub>) and a portion is absorbed by the wall (W<sub>abs<\/sub>).<\/p>\n<p>Combined, absorption (W<sub>abs<\/sub>) and reflection (W<sub>refl<\/sub>) always add up to 100%.<\/p>\n<p>Absorption (W<sub>abs<\/sub>) is composed of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dissipation (W<sub>dis<\/sub>), sound power which is converted to energy\/heat when striking a structural component;<\/li>\n<li>Transmission, sound power which is transmitted to neighbouring spaces, can be described as:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li>direct transmission (W<sub>2<\/sub>); or<\/li>\n<li>transmission to other building components by way of flanking (W<sub>3<\/sub>), structure-borne sound.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thus an open window is an excellent absorber (100%) yet it is not a sound insulator.
